Eligibility Criteria for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship

If you are interested in the Bill Gates Scholarship for International Students, then you must meet the following eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree to apply for a Master’s degree
  • Applicants must have a Master’s degree for a Ph.D.
  • Applicants must show evidence of their academic ability through their transcripts, references, and experience
  • Applicants must be able to make a strong case for a particular postgraduate degree at Cambridge

Scholarship Value

Core components

  • The University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate
  • For single students, a maintenance allowance (£17,848 for 12 months at the 2022-23 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months) – for PhD degree scholars, the award is for up to 4 years.
  • At both the beginning and end of the course, one economy single airfare,
  • inbound visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge

University composition fees vary for different types of students. Applicants should refer to the Graduate Studies Prospectus for details of the exact amount. When an EU student has been able to obtain a fee award from the public authorities, they will accept it, and the trust will not pay these fees.

Discretionary components

The Trust also considers requests for a variety of additional funds at its discretion:

  • Academic development funds – from £500 to up to £2,000, which depends on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
  • Family allowance – for one child up to £10,120 and two children up to £14,440, or for more children. There is no funding for a partner.
  • Fieldwork – You can apply to maintain your general care allowance during fieldwork as part of your Ph.D. (the trust does not fund other fieldwork expenses, as it is a university Composition Fee).
  • Maternity/Paternity funding –If you need it, you can apply for a 6-month study break, during which time you will continue to receive your care allowance.
  • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties

What is not covered?

Most of the expenses are covered by Gate Cambridge, but the scholarship does not cover the cost of bench fees, scientific instruments, or similar educational resources. The Trust hopes that the cost of such a basic course will go to the Cambridge Department of Education.
