Who Is Alexandra Grant?
Alexandra Grant is a Los Angeles–based artist who works across painting, sculpture, drawing, installation and video. Her work explores how language shapes the way we communicate, read, translate and understand one another.
She is often described as a “radical collaborator” because much of her art begins with a text or a conversation with another writer or thinker. She has worked with novelist Michael Joyce, philosopher Hélène Cixous and actor Keanu Reeves, turning their words into visual art and installations inspired by linguistic theory.
Early Life and Education
Grant was born in Ohio in 1973. Her father, a geology professor from Scotland, had moved to Oberlin College in 1969. Her mother, an American political science professor, later worked as an educational administrator, a foreign service diplomat and a lecturer in Africa and the Middle East.
After her parents divorced, Grant grew up with her mother in Mexico City and attended a British international school. At 11 she spent a year at the Thomas Jefferson School in St. Louis, Missouri, and later studied at the International School of Paris. Living in Mexico, Europe and the Middle East, she learned English, Spanish and French.
She earned a BA in studio art and history from Swarthmore College (1995) and an MFA in painting and drawing from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco (2000).
Career and Artwork
Grant’s work investigates the writing process and ideas from linguistic theory. In 2015 she exhibited “Antigone 3000”, a painting inspired by the Greek play Antigone and its line “I was born to love, not to hate.” The same year she received the City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship, and the work was shown at the Barnsdall Art Center and later in LACMA’s “L.A. Exuberance” exhibition. With her sister Florence Grant, she also co-wrote the screenplay “Antigone Is Me”.
