Scholarship Coverage
The Scholarship of Tokyo University is a fully funded scholarship for international students and will cover most of the students’ expenses.
- Full Tuition and Entrance Fee Exemption.
- Monthly Allowance:
- 144,000 Yen/Month (for a student in a Master’s Program).
- 145,000 Yen/Month (for a student in a Doctoral Program).
- An additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen can be added to students who are studying or doing research in certain areas of the country.
- Tuition Fee: Full Tuition and Enrollment fees will be exempt.
- Travelling Cost: Round Airfare Travel Tickets will be provided to/from Japan to their Home Country.

Eligibility Criteria
- International students from all over the world are eligible to apply for a Japanese Government scholarship.
- Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1985.
- Candidates must apply for the field of study or Subject they have studied at their former university or related field.
Language Requirements
- Applicants must meet the English language proficiency requirements.
- The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has a test score of English proficiency of B2 or above on the scale (e.g. TOEFL iBT 72 or above, IELTS 5.5 or above).

- All those Students whose language institute was in the English Language can submit a certificate of English proficiency from their university and are exempt from the language test.

- Application form (must be in double-sided print)
- Letter of recommendation
- Passport size photograph must be taken within the last 6 months (4.5 x 3.5 cm, without cap, upper-body, full-faced).
- Official transcript
- Copy of the student’s passport
- Official statement of (expected) graduation
- Abstract of graduation thesis
Deadline
For the University-Recommended MEXT Scholarship 2027 (Graduate School of Science), the application period is 15 to 30 October 2026 (Japan Standard Time). Nominees are informed in mid-February 2027, and final grantees around June 2027. MEXT has said this category may be discontinued after AY2027.
